PHOTO FRIDAY - 'Poverty'

This PF thang is becoming the only remnant of my once-thriving (ha ha) career in bloggage. Oh well, better than nothing, right?

This week's theme is poverty.

The picture below was taken in one of the most poverty-stricken places I've been to, and yet...

Smiles, energy, colour, life... even, perhaps, contentment? But, above all, unashamed proclamation of the Risen Lord Jesus!

Perhaps they're not as poor as I thought....

PHOTO FRIDAY - 'New'

The latest PF theme is 'New'...

It's probably totally unoriginal, but the first thing I thought of was the newness of everything to do with babies - not just the fact that they are new to the world, but that the world is new to them. And I think this is a cute photo!

pleonasm \PLEE-uh-naz-uhm\, noun:

The latest 'word of the day' courtesy of dictionary.com...

1. The use of more words than are necessary to express an idea; as, "I saw it with my own eyes."
2. An instance or example of pleonasm.
3. A superfluous word or expression.

I particularly liked this example they gave:

"Such a phrase from President Nixon's era, much favored by politicians, is "at this moment in time." Presumably these five words mean "now." That pleonasm probably does little harm except, perhaps, to the reputation of the speaker.-- Eoin McKiernan, "Last Word: Special Relationships", Irish America, August 31, 1994"

I must admit I quite like a bit of pleonasm.. but perhaps it's just a way of adding colour to distract readers from the fact that real meaning is sorely lacking?

To quote someone I know (can't remember who...) -- "what would Orwell think?!"
